How Brainspotting Therapy helps

Talk therapy alone cannot provide whole person healing.

We need to connect with, listen to, and help the body find safety so that it can release and heal. Words and more insights are not required for this type of deep healing.

If you are tired of trying to talk your way into changing, then Somatic EMDR Intensives may the next right step for you. Imagine being able to accomplish in one session what may take months in traditional therapy. That’s the power of healing from the body

You might be struggling with:

  • Chronic medical issues that seem to flare up without explanation, leaving you wondering if there’s a deeper reason for your ongoing struggles.

  • A disconnect between your mind and body—you have the knowledge, but your body and emotions seem to be at odds, creating an internal battle. You long for alignment and inner peace.

  • The inability to express yourself—you want to share a painful event with your partner, friend, or counselor, but you can’t seem to find the words.

  • Memory gaps—you don’t remember parts of your childhood or significant periods of time, yet you experience symptoms that point to unresolved trauma.

  • Constant anxiety—you feel jittery, struggle to relax, and find it hard to slow down or rest.

  • Chronic medical issues that seem to flare up without explanation, leaving you wondering if there’s a deeper reason for your ongoing struggles.

What happens to the body after trauma

When we are in a situation where our brains registers danger (whether it is real or perceived) our body’s first goal is survival.

To focus more efficiently on surviving, our language access goes “off-line” until the body recognizes the danger is over. The portion of the brain that signals danger is activated, the logical and meaning making portions go off-line. That’s why we loose access to language, time and meaning making.

Since trauma is not a logical wound, it does not heal by simply talking or changing your thoughts. Later when the event comes up in your mind (triggers, flashbacks, dreams, anniversaries of the event), your body will try to “help” by shutting down the language area again. This protective brain cycle can leave us feeling stuck, helpless, and weary.

How Brainspotting helps heal from trauma

The way our system (mind-body) is designed to survive trauma is to sense and survive the danger and not necessarily make sense of it. The mechanism that enables us to get through a painful moment can also keep us stuck!

Brainspotting is a therapeutic approach used to help people process emotional trauma or psychological pain. It involves focusing on a specific spot in your visual field while the therapist guides you. The idea is that where you look (the "spot") can be linked to emotions or trauma stored in your brain. By holding your focus on these "brain spots," you can begin to release stored pain and process emotions more deeply than just talking through them. This simple sounding and gentle therapy is a healing technique about focusing on specific areas of the brain to unlock deep emotional healing.

Through Brainspotting, the body register that the traumatic event is over/in the past and help the body release the stuck survival energy and reset your central nervous system. Isn't the body AMAZING!

You’re in the right place.

Brainspotting intensives can help you accomplish in one session what may take months in traditional therapy.

What is a Therapy Intensive?

A Therapy Intensive is an accelerated form of therapy designed to help clients go deeper and get results faster. Instead of attending therapy one hour per week for a year, why not carve out a weekend or a week for Therapy Intensives? It’s a cutting-edge approach to help people feel better faster. No need for a weekly therapy appointment.

In fact, many people think of Therapy Intensives like a retreat. For that weekend or week you can unplug, take time off work, get a babysitter, or even stay in a hotel.

This time is completely dedicated to you so you can focus on healing, reflecting, and reconnecting.

faqs

You have Brianspotting Intensive questions. I’ve got answers.

  • When the portion of the brain that signals danger is activated, the logical and meaning making portions go off-line. We lose language access when we are in an overwhelming or dangerous moment so our system can focus on surviving.

It’s part of how our body is designed to survive…Think of it this way, if you were being chased by a bear, it would not be helpful to stop to think and think about how the bear got there, what species of bear it was or what you were going to have for dinner. Your our body would be on a mission to get you out of danger and it would automatically activate your fight, flight or freeze mode to help you getting out of danger.

  • I get it; Brainspotting and in general the term "Somatics" might sound a bit out there, but it's actually a legitimate and evidence-based therapy.

It's all about the mind-body connection and how physical sensations and movements are linked to our emotions and mental well-being.

  • Absolutely! It’s my personal favorite.

Combining Therapies like Brainspotting with EMDR for trauma healing is like having a dynamic duo in your therapeutic toolkit. They complement each other in addressing both the mind and body aspects of trauma.

EMDR works wonders in reprocessing memories and untangling the emotional knots associated with trauma. Now, add Brainspotting to the mix, and you're bringing the body into the conversation.

Both approaches are somatic approaches recognize that trauma isn't just stored in your thoughts but can also reside in your body, showing up as physical sensations or tension.

Somatic Therapies might involve exercises or techniques that help you become more aware of bodily sensations, promoting a mind-body connection. When paired it's like tackling the trauma from multiple angles.

EMDR helps rewire those challenging memories in your mind, while Somatic Therapies assist in releasing physical tension and promoting a sense of safety in your body.

The combination can be especially powerful because trauma often impacts both our mental and physical well-being. It's like a holistic approach to healing, addressing the full spectrum of how trauma can affect us.

  • Therapy Intensives are more effective and efficient than normal 50-minute therapy sessions. Typically in a 50-minute session, there are at least 5-10 minutes of “check-in” at the start of the session and usually, 5-10 minutes spent on “closing up” or “checking out” at the end of a session - Leaving only 30-40 minutes for deep therapeutic work. Therapy Intensives are different. A 3-hour Therapy Intensive allows for 2.5 hours of depth work. That’s the equivalent of five 50-minute sessions or more than a month of therapy - in a single day!

  • Therapy Intensives are perfect for people that are ready for relief now. If you’re ready to see things change in your life and your relationships but you don’t want to wait for that to happen next year - a Therapy Intensive may be right for you. If you have a specific topic, trauma, or stressor that you want support with - this can be the focus of your Therapy Intensive. The dedicated time will be customized specifically to you and your goals.

Intensives are not a good fit IF:

    • You are satisfied with your weekly or every other week therapy.

    • You love the idea of a slower and steady pace. You want smaller steps to add up over time, not a leap or jump.Accelerating your healing sounds overwhelming to you.

    • You are in a mental health crisis and require 24/7 support.

  • Therapy Intensives work very well as an adjunct therapy. I would ask that you sign a Release of Information so that your current therapist and I can collaborate/coordinate to best serve you.

  • A 50% non-refundable deposit is due at the time you book your Therapy Intensive.

The remaining 50% is due on the first day of the Intensive Session.

As you are thinking through finances, I am now a Care Credit provider and able to accept Care Credit for payment.

One of the benefits of Care Credit is being able to make payments over a period of time. Learn more about Care Credit
